English I PreAP Course Overview

In English I, students will be practicing and implementing strategies to assist them in becoming better writers and critical readers. These goals will help them achieve a higher level of writing awareness both in their own writing as well as in the authors they read. We will study the most influential works of writers who, by their power and originality, have formed the character of great literature through the ages. The hope of this instructor is that her students develop a lifelong love of reading and she will encourage participation in class discussions to give the student confidence in their own responses and intellectual discovery.
Fundamentals of grammar, syntax, rhetoric, and punctuation, as well as basic literary forms (essay, short story, drama, novel, and poetry) are covered. Students are guided through the process of composing a short research essay. Through regular writing assignments, students can demonstrate their writing skills as well as experiment with various writing strategies.
In my classroom I foster an atmosphere of civility and cooperation, and urge my students to treat one another with the respect and consideration they hope to receive in return.
